Bernice E. NORTON, age 80, of Fairfield died Tuesday, April 26, 2011 at Parkview Care Center in Fairfield after a lengthy illness.
Bernice was born January 7, 1931 in Packwood to Elmer C. and Nancy H. GREINER.
She attended country schools in Jefferson County and Fairfield High School.
On September 25, 1949, she married Harold D. NORTON at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. They have three children, Deborah CARLSON (John JENNINGS), Richard NORTON and Alan NORTON (Linda); four grandsons, Casey and Christopher CARLSON, Ben and Cody NORTON, all of Fairfield.
Bernice along with her husband and family owned and operated Norton's Service Center of Fairfield for 42 years. Her next love was flying a Piper Warrior where she spent many hours in the air. She liked to compete in air races in which she always did very well. She held a private pilot and instrument-rating license for 22 years and was on the airport committee for 23 years while working to bring a modern airport to Fairfield. Additionally she was a member of the 99's (an international organization for women pilots formed in 1929 by Amelia Earhart) of which she held the offices of treasurer, secretary, vice chairwoman and chairwoman. Bernice enjoyed snowmobiling with her husband, family and friends and made numerous trips over the years to northern Wisconsin to ride.
She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother Joe GREINER and a sister Ethel SCHUCHMAN.
Funeral services are scheduled for 10:30 A.M. Sunday at the First Lutheran Church in Fairfield with Pastor Stacy Grau officiating.
Interment will be in the Evergreen Cemetery in Fairfield.
The family will receive friends on Friday evening from 5:00 until 7:00 P.M. at the First Lutheran Church for visitation.
In lieu of flowers memorials are requested to the First Lutheran Church or to Compassus Hospice. Memorials may be mailed to 1230 Glenview Circle, Fairfield or left at the Raymond Funeral Home.
Arrangements are in the care of the Raymond Funeral Home in Fairfield.
