Geoffrey BAKER, 84, of Fairfield, died at 11:35 p.m. Tuesday, April 12, 2011, at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City.
A service to celebrate Mr. BAKER's life will be held at 1:15 p.m. Saturday in Dalby Hall at the Argiro Student Center at Maharishi University of Management.
Memorials may be made to the Geoffrey BAKER Commemorative Art Award through the M.U.M. Development Office.
Mr. BAKER was born June 1, 1926, in England.
Mr. BAKER served in the British military as a paratrooper in Africa and the Middle East.
He received the Oxvord and Cambridge School Certificate in 1943 from Fettes College in Edinburgh and the National Diploma in Design in 1951 and the Art Teachers Diploma in 1952 from Cardiff University and College of Art in England. Mr. BAKER studied in India in 1968 with Maharishi Mahesh Yogi to become a teacher of the Transcendental Meditation technique. He attended numerous courses on consciousness throughout Europe from 1966-1990. Mr. BAKER's paintings were exhibited at the Royal Academy of Art in London, the Royal Scottish Academy and many other galleries. He taught drawing and painting at schools of art in London from 1959-1970 and lectured extensively around England. Mr. BAKER taught painting and understanding art for 32 years at Maharishi University of Management. He also offered public lectures around the country and created numerous videotapes on art and music.
At M.U.M., Mr. BAKER received the Development of Consciousness Award, the Maharishi Creativity Award, the Outstanding Teacher Award, the Cultural Excellence Award, the Maharishi Award for Excellence in Teaching and the Enlightened Educator Award.
Survivors include his sister, Paola LAKE of Maidenhead, England.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
