"BURNED IN HER HOME. Friday night Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Walmer, whose home is in Cedar Township, five miles southeast of this city, were awakened from sleep between 10 and 11 o'clock by the smell and sound of fire. The husband arose from his bed hurriedly to see whence the alarm came. As he opened a door leading into the kitchen the flames burst in upon him and completely enveloped him. Crying to his wife to make good her escape from the burning building, he ran into a room where the children were sleeping, picked them up one by one and hurried them through a window into the outer darkness. In her excitement Mrs. Walmer did not realize that her little ones had escaped and she returned to the building, which was then a mass of flame, to arouse them. She was in the burning building but a few moments but in that time she was exposed to all the fury of the fire and was shockingly burned. . . . .Dr. Carpenter, who was called to see her as soon as possible to dispatch a messenger to this city, pronounced recovery impossible. The poor woman was taken to the home of a brother, R. S. Pattison, a short distance away, where she lingered in great agony until the next afternoon, when death came to her relief. Mr. Walmer was also burned about the hands and face, but his injuries are not serious. The other members of the family escaped unscathed. . . . .Mrs. Walmer was a daughter of the late James Pattison, and a woman who was well known in this city. Her age was about forty-two years, and she leaves five children."
