"DEATH OF ANDREW LOUDEN, SR. Jefferson County's old settlers are rapidly passing away. Each week almost another name is added to the long roll of dead pioneers. Andrew Louden is the last. He died Thursday at his old home in Cedar Township, where he had lived since 1843. Mr. Louden was born near Belfast, Ireland, May 4th, 1811. On January 6th, 1840, he was married to Jane Speer, who has been dead about six years, and who was a sister of James Speer whose death we noted about three months ago. In 1841 Mr. and Mrs. Louden came to America, and after a year's residence in Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania, came to Iowa, arriving in Fairfield in 1842. One of his first pieces of work was on the Old Pitkin Mill, on the Birmingham road, which has long ago passed away. Seven children survive Mr. Louden, William, John, Andrew, James, Robert, Thomas and Agnes, the latter the wife of Mr. John Dill. Mr. Louden during his long residence in this county had made many friends who held him in high esteem. He was a good citizen and a good man in all that the terms apply. His funeral occurred Saturday, and the remains were followed to the grave by a large concourse of friends and neighbors who mourn a deep loss to their community. The cause of Mr. Louden's death was smokers' cancer. The disease made its appearance on his under lip about a year ago, and was removed by Dr. Worthington. It reappeared again, however, in a greatly aggravated form, and attacking the glands of the neck ate its way into the mouth and entirely through the right jawbone. He suffered intense pain during the earlier and middle stages of his affliction, but later made little complaint of pain, and died almost without a struggle."
