MRS. DANA DEAD; RITES TOMORROW

Passed Away Last Night at 7:30 Oclock After An Illness of Three Years

Mrs. George L. DANA, died at her home, 201 East Grimes street, last night at 7:30 oclock after an illness of three years resulting from an attack of typhoid fever from which she never fully recovered. For seven months she had been a helpless invalid.

Funeral services will be held at the home tomorrow afternoon at 2:30 oclock, conducted by Rev. Harvey E. Butler. Interment will be in Evergreen cemetery.

Mrs. DANA was Miss Hattie E. WOLF before her marriage, being the daughter of Phillp and Caroline (POWELL-SPALDING) WOLF. She was born in Evansburgh, Ohio, November 14, 1848. Her father and mother had lost their companions and had married again and Hattie was the first born of three girls by the later marriage. These, with the children by their former marriages made a family of twelve children. All these, with the exception of two half-brothers and a sister, preceeded her in death, the sister being Mrs. Henrietta CROSWELL of Hastings, Nebr.

She had seven half brothers in the Civil War, four of whom did not return. Her parents died only a day apart of typhoid fever when she was six years old. She was taken into the family of her uncle, John SHIRK, with whom she lived until her marriage, May 11, 1873, to Mr. DANA in Bureau county, Ill. Three years later they moved to Jefferson county, locating on a farm four miles north of Fairfield. They moved to the city in 1911.

Besides the husband, she is survived by their six children: Mrs. Jennie WEST of Clark, Nebr., Mrs. A. L. COOP of Fairfield, David Danna of Rose Creek, Minn., Mrs Mildred WHITHAM (sic. later married to William KANN) and Earl DANA of this city, and Clarence DANA who resides on the home farm. There are seventeen grandchildren, one preceeding her in death, and six great grandchildren. All the children but one were at her bedside when she died. The other one, David, will arrive tonight for the funeral.

*Transcribed for genealogy purposes. I am not directly related to this family, but there are some of the DANA family on my family tree as a result of marriage of Clarence DANA to Sylvia T BRAY.

OBITUARY

Mrs. G. L. DANA

Harriet Eliza WOLF, daughter of Philip and Caroline (POWELL-SPALDING) WOLF, was born in Evansburg, Coshocton county, Ohio, Nov. 14, 1848, and departed this life Aug. 8, 1927, aged 78 years, 9 months and 24 days.

Three years ago she was stricken with typhoid fever from which she never fully recovered and for the past seven months has been a helpless invalid. Mr. WOLF was first married to Elizabeth MEEK, in 1832, before whose death there had been born to them six children, Lambert, Milton, Jemima, Joseph, Margaret and Henry.

Caroline married first in 1840 Lyman SPALDING, and at the time of her husband's death they were the parents of three boys, Thomas, Freeman and Lyman. Philip and Caroline were united in marriage Feb. 10, 1848, and to them were born three girls, Harriet, Henrietta and Sarah, making a family of twelve children.

All of the boys (7) enlisted in the Civil War, Thomas, Freeman, and Lyman SPALDING giving their lives for their country. The three children still surviving are, Milton aged 90 of West LaFayette, Ohio, Joseph of the State of Washington and Henrietta CRISWELL (sic - CROSWELL) of Hastings, Nebraska.

When Mrs. DANA was 6 years old her parents were both taken with typhoid fever and their deaths were only a day apart. She was taken into the home of her aunt and uncle, Mr. and Mrs. John SHIRK, where she grew up as one of the family. They resided in Ohio, until 1866, when they moved to Bureau county, Illinois.

May 11, 1873, she was united in marriage to George L. DANA, they lived there, until February, 1875, when they moved to the farm four miles north of Fairfield where they resided until 1911, then coming to Fairfield to reside, buying a home on East Grimes street.

Besides the husband, she leaves six children: Mrs. Frank WEST of Clarks, Neb., Mrs. A. L. COOP, of Fairfield, David of Rose Creek, Minn., Mrs. Mildred WHITAM (sic - WHITHAM) and Earl of this city, and Clarence who resides on the home farm. There were 17 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren, the only death occuring in the family in more than half a century being a grandchild, Jack, son of Mr. and Mrs. Earl DANA, who died Dec. 15, 1925. In her uncle's family--of six children, seven with Mrs. DANA--there was not a death in 65 years till within the past five months. She is the third to be called by death.

Harriet was a true loving help-mate to her husband, a model mother, always thoughtful and kind and thoroughly unselfish and affectionate. As a neighbor and a friend she was highly respected and loved by all as the great numbers of flowers at her funeral services attested.

Funeral services were held at the home, conducted by the M. E. Minister, Harvey E. Butler. She was a christian from childhood. Her sons, sons-in-law and a grandson acted as pall bearers, David, Clarence and Earl DANA, A. L. COOP, Frank WEST and Raymond COOP. Interment was in the beautiful Evergreen cemetery.
