LAVINA A. CHANDLER
Lavina A. CHANDLER, eldest of a family of ten children of Ward and Sarah (sic. Sarah Jane HOUGH) CHANDLER, mas (sic. was) born in Jefferson county, Iowa, three miles north of Fairfield, June 6, 1847, and passed away at her home in Packwood, Feb. 15, 1928, at the age of 80 years, 8 months and 6 days. While yet a child her parents moved farther out into the newer and less settled section of this new state, building a home and settling about nine miles northwest of Fairfield, which was the home of the family for many years. The father passed away July 9, 1869, and she with her mother and other members of the family made this their home until through the failing health of the youngest brother and age and infirmities of the mother, they were compelled to abandon the farm and moved to Packwood, in 1884, being the third family of the town. Through years she clung to and cared for her mother until her death, Nov. 25, 1907 (sic. 1906).
At the age of fifteen she was converted and joined the Prairie Chapel Methodist church. Kindred as her devotion to her mother was her interest and devotion to her church. Because of distance and inconvenience to church, she was instrumental in the organization and maintenance of a Sunday school near by the home. Miss CHANDLER being the eldest of the children was only second to her mother in solicitude and care for the others of the home. She had survived all except two, C. D. and W. H., both of Packwood. Two children died in infancy. The other members of the family were Frank, Montreville, Ellen, Clara, and George having preceded her in death.
Beside the brothers, W. H. and C. D., there are two nieces, Mrs. Alda HINSHAW of Washington, Iowa, and Mrs. Teresa GUNDERSON of Minneapolis, Minn. Also four nephews, Ward CHANDLER of Packwood, Grover KNESS, of Borger, Texas, Frank KNESS of Kline, Calif., and Elmer KNESS of Vici, Okla. After the death of their mother, Mrs. Clara KNESS, the three boys made their home with their Aunt Vina.
Her devotion and sacrifice for others has endeared her in the memory of all who have known her. No task so great or sacrifice so exacting that she was not ready to give relief if within her power. Her broken health was rather prolonged and tedious but was endured with patience and fortitude, until at the last, peacefully as a child in the arms of its mother closes its eyes in sleep, so she passed quietly into that long sleep which knows no waking. But as Dorcas of the Bible, she will be remembered for her good deeds and works of kindness.
Funeral services were held from the C. D. CHANDLER home on Friday morning, conducted by Rev. W. B. Ireland of the Methodist church. Interment took place in the family lot in the Evergreen cemetery in Fairfield.
