Death of Philander CHANDLER.

Philander CHANDLER, who has been a resident of this county since the fall of 1840, died at this home three miles northeast of town Monday afternoon. He had been in ill health for nearly a year past, being stricken with paralysis about that time, but had only been confined to his bed for about a week previous to his death. Mr. CHANDLER was born in Warren county, New York, March 12, 1814. He left home at an early age, and spent many years hunting and trapping in the forests and mountains of his native state. In 1840 he came to Iowa and entered the land upon which he died. He was poor in purse then, and the purchase money of his land was derived from a season's hunting in Wisconsin. In January, 1842, he was married to Miss Martha BONNIFIELD, who survives him. In 1850 Mr. CHANDLER made another trip to Wisconsin, felled the timber, and rafted it down the river to Burlington, with which he afterwards constructed the house in which he died. And the house then built answered fully its owner's purposes, for it was not until last season that it ever needed a new roof.-- Mr. CHANDLER was a hard working, industrious man and a good manager.-- During his life in Iowa he had accumulated quite his share of this world's goods, and died the possessor of nearly 500 broad acres of fine land. To Mr. and Mrs. CHANDLER four children were born (sic. five, actually. Alonzo J CHANDLER died in 1874), all of them now living, Mrs. HOBBIE, of Columbus Junction, Mrs. O. T. HOOPES, Warren E. and Charles S., the latter three living in this county.-- Mr. CHANDLER'S life was a busy one. His earlier days were passed in the rough, vigorous life of a pioneer and woodsman, and he never lost his taste for the enjoyments of such a life. He was a kind and loving husband and father, a careful business man and successful in nearly all enterprises he undertook. His funeral occurs today, and the remains will be interred in the cemetery near this city.
