Joe L. KIRKHART

Joe L. KIRKHART, 84, of rural Cantril, died at 11:01 p.m. Wednesday, March 30, 2011, at home.

A service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Pedrick Funeral Home in Keosauqua, with the Rev. Jerry Caughron officiating. Burial, with military rites by American Legion Russell-Strait Post, will be in Maple Grove Cemetery in Cantril.

Open visitation will begin at 2 p.m. Friday at the funeral home, where the family will be present from 5-7 p.m.

Memorials to Maple Grove Cemetery or Russell-Strait Post may be left at the funeral home or may be mailed to the family at 16411 250th St., Cantril 52542.

Mr. KIRKHART was born Nov. 25, 1926, near Cantril, the son of John and Ethel BINGAMAN KIRKHART. He married Betty CAZEY Oct. 14, 1951, in Cantril.

Mr. KIRKHART graduated from Cantril High School. He spent his life farming on the Kirkhart family farm north of Cantril.

Mr. KIRKHART served in the United States Army during the Korean conflict.

He was a member of American Legion Russell-Strait Post No. 483 of Milton. He had been a long-time secretary and treasurer for the Cantril Fire Department. Mr. KIRKHART had served on the Grinnell Mutual Insurance board and as a Des Moines Township Trustee. He also had served on the Van Buren County FHA and ASCS committees.

Survivors include his wife; one son, Roger KIRKHART and wife Donna of Cantril; one daughter, Joyce KIRKHART of Cantril; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents.
