Verna Louise SLOAN, 91, of rural Eldon, died at 3:50 a.m. Thursday, March 24, 2011, in the Davis County Hospital hospice room in Bloomfield.
A funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Eldon Christian Church, with the Rev. Joshua Gordon officiating. Burial will be in Bethlehem Cemetery, rural Floris.
Open visitation will begin at 3 p.m. Friday at the church, with the family present 6-7:30 p.m.
Memorials to Eldon Christian Church may be left at the church or mailed to the family at 31763 Venus Trail, Eldon 52554.
Arrangements are in the care of Pedrick Funeral Home of Keosauqua.
Mrs. SLOAN was born Oct. 10, 1919, in Savannah, Iowa, the daughter of Fred and Lulu PIRTLE MELVIN. She married Harley (sic - David Harley) SLOAN July 16, 1938, in Bloomfield. He died June 16, 2009.
Mrs. SLOAN graduated from Bloomfield High School in 1938. She and her husband farmed near Eldon their entire lives. She was a resident of the Bloomfield Care Center for the past three years.
Mrs. SLOAN was a member of Eldon Christian Church. She had belonged to Oakdale Club and Lioness Club in Eldon.
Survivors include two sons, Jerry and wife Bev and Jim SLOAN, all of Eldon; two grandchildren; and four great-granddaughters.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Hazel SMALL; and two brothers, James and Denzel MELVIN.
