John H. McCarty, 75-year-old Ottumwa businessman of 515 Hamilton street, died Saturday [22 May 1950]at 5:10 p. m. at the Ottumwa hospital.
The son of John and Margaret Warren McCarty, he was born May 31, 1874, at Kirkville, Iowa. His marriage to Maude Hull took place June 5, 1895.
He started in the banking business here in 1905, later being connected with banks in Stockport and FAIRFIELD. He returned to Ottumwa in 1922 and was associated with the Phoenix Company of which he later became president. Mr. McCarty retired from active business three years ago.
A member of the First Congregational church here, he was also a member of the Workman lodge No. 634, A. F. and A. M. at stockport.
Mr. McCarty is survived by his wife; one son, Prof. Harold H. McCarty of Iowa City, a faculty member at the University of Iowa; one daughter, Mrs. Arthur L. Blome of Ottumwa; four grandchildren; John and Robert McCarty both of Iowa City and Donald and Joan Blome, both of Ottumwa; one brother W. F. McCarty of
Oskaloosa; two half-brothers, Ray Burns of Underwood and Rex Burns of Linby; and one half-sister, Mrs. Nora Kitterman of Albia.Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 3 p.m. at the Johnson funeral chapel in charge of the Rev. Clarence W. Hanscomb of the First Congregational church.
Burial will be in Ottumwa cemetery with special masonic services held by theOttumwa lodges.
Pall bearers will be A. W. Trautwein, R. E.
Wellman, Edwin Fern, Floyd Fulton, Harry J.
Freshour and K. P. Cruchelow.
