Fern Alberta JOHNSON

Fern Alberta JOHNSON, 94, of Huron, S.D., died at 6:44 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 24, 2011, at SunQuest Healthcare Center.

A funeral was held Feb. 28 at First United Methodist Church. Burial was in Restlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery in Huron.

In place of flowers, memorials may be made to the Huron Public Library.

Mrs. JOHNSON was born Aug. 7, 1916, near Highmore, S.D., the daughter of William Arthur "Artie" and Lola HARTER ELLERTON. She married John Harold JOHNSON Dec. 6, 1941, in Huron, S.D. He died June 20, 1995.

Mrs. JOHNSON graduated from Highmore High School in 1934. After attending the Northern Normal and Industrial School in Aberdeen, she earned an elementary school certificate and taught school for 10 years. She worked briefly at Armour & Company and for many years as a sales clerk for Tempo Department Store and J. C. Penney's. During elections, she worked as a poll watcher.

In 1986, the South Dakota Department of Agriculture recognized Mrs. JOHNSON for service to the state as a teacher in a one-teacher country school.

Mrs. JOHNSON attended First United Methodist Church and participated in United Methodist Women's Loyalty Circle. A longtime member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Forrest McMullen Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1776, Mrs. JOHNSON served as auxiliary president in 1961 and received the Lady of Distinction Award in 1963. She also was active in The American Legion Auxiliary Eight and Forty and received a certificate of appreciation for outstanding service to that organization in 2005.

Mrs. JOHNSON volunteered assisting with free blood pressure clinics at Lewis Drug Store and delivering patient mail at Huron Regional Medical Center. When her children were young, she served as a scout leader, PTA officer and room mother.

She enjoyed country line dancing and performed with fellow dancers at South Dakota State Fairs and at the Huron Nursing Home. Her hobbies included reading, quilting and crocheting.

Survivors include two sons, Robert D. JOHNSON of Huron, S.D., and David J. JOHNSON and wife Cheryl of Fairfield; one daughter, Shirley A. PRY of Elberfeld, Ind.; one brother, Wayne of North Fort Myers, Fla.; one sister, Imogene HIEB of Harold, S.D.; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; four brothers, Ray, Claire, Lloyd and Lyle ELLERTON; and one sister, Vivian LaFURGE.
