Ill Only a Few Hours.

Elijah EDWARDS was stricken with paralysis at his home in this city Saturday morning, and passed away in the evening. He was in the eighty-fifth year of his age. Mr. EDWARDS was born in Huntingdon county, Penn., June 19th, 1816, and was married in that state to Mary Ann MAKIN June 18th, 1840. The wife died May (sic - June) 22d, 1853. There were no children by this marriage, but Mr. and Mrs. EDWARDS reared to womanhood Mrs. H. L. Hopkins of Cowlee, Neb. October 30th, 1853, Mr. EDWARDS was united in marriage with Sarah J. LYNN, who survives him. Mr. EDWARDS came to this county more than half a century ago and located at Salina. He was the first tailor of that place, and for many years was postmaster and justice of the peace. He afterwards removed to Pleasant Plain and operated a hotel, and was engaged in like business at Allerton for some time. He came to this city thirteen years ago, and has since resided here. He was a member of the Methodist Episcopal church for many years and in his younger days was quite active in its works. He was a man of excellent character and the utmost integrity. The remains were interred in this city Monday, funeral services being held at the First Methodist church by Rev. I. O. Kemble and Rev. J. G. Condit.

Obituaries.

Elijah EDWARDS died in this city Dec. 22d, 1900. He was born in Huntingdon county, Pennsylvania, June 19th, 1816, aged 84 years, 6 months and 3 days. In 1850 he came to Iowa, this county, in 1850, and from that time up to 1876 his home was in Salina where he ran a hotel in connection with his tailor shop and was also postmaster at that place for many years. After selling his property in Salina he moved to Pleasant Plain, where he bought a hotel and ran it up to the year of 1881, when he moved to Allerton and there engaged in the hotel business for several years, when he moved to this city. He was twice married, the first time he married Mary Ann MAKIN, June 18th, 1840, who died May 22d, 1853 (sic - June 22, 1853), and in October 30th 1853, he again married Sarah J. LYNN, who survives him. He was a happy man, always seeming contented with his surroundings. He was a member of the M. E. church for many years. He was the last member of a family of 13 children, two formerly lived in this county, William H. and Robert EDWARDS. One died in this county and the other in Wayne County. The funeral services were held at the M. E. church, conducted by Rev. I. O. Kemble, Monday afternoon at 3:00 o'clock.
