FAIRFIELD FIFTY YEARS
Samuel BIGLOW (sic) Who Died this Morning Had Lived Long in City.

Samuel E. BIGELOW, one of the oldest and most widely known citizens of this city passed away at his home on East Briggs street this morning shortly after 7:15 o'clock.

For forty five years Mr. BIGELOW manufactured boots and shoes in a shop on the corner of North Court and East Briggs streets and until 1870 he also carried on a leather business in connection with his other line of work. It has only been in the past three or four years that Mr. BIGELOW has relinquished his work and disposed of his shop.

Mr. BIGELOW was born in Worcester county, Mass., February 20, 1825, and spent the days of his boyhood in his native state. On February 5, 1852 he was united in marriage to Miss Mary S. HOLLIDAY at Marietta, Ohio. To them were born three children, one of whom with the mother have long since passed to the eternal rest. Two daughters, Mrs. Susan Kate HAMILTON wife of Dr. Edward HAMILTON of Elgin, Ill, and Mrs. Cynthia L. HAMMOND of this city survive Mr. BIGELOW.

In 1858 he moved to this city and established a boot and shoe shop, in which business he became known to almost everyone in Jefferson county. In this work he continued until failing health made active work impossible. He was never an office seeker, preferring to devote his time and attention strictly to his own business affairs but he served the city faithfully as councilman and as city clerk during the earlier days of the city government.

Mr. BIGELOW had been a member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows for sixty years, having been initiated in Marietta (Ohio) lodge in 1847. Upon moving to this city he moved his membership in the order and at the time of his death was a member of Jefferson Lodge No. 4 of this city. The residence of Mr. BIGELOW in this city covers almost a half of a century. He had been actively engaged in its business interests over 45 years and had by his work aided not a little in the upbuilding of the city.

The service will be held at two o'clock Monday afternoon. Jefferson Lodge No. 4 I. O. O. F. will have charge of the last services. Rev Pearse Pinch of the congregational church will conduct the services at the home.

Death of Samuel E. BIGELOW.

Samuel E. BIGALOW, who was prostrated by paralysis six months ago, died at his home in this city Saturday. Funeral services were held Monday afternoon. Rev. Pearse Pinch conducted the religious exercises, and the body was buried with the rites of Odd Fellowship. Mr. BIGELOW was a native of Massachusetts, born at Sutton February 20th, 1825. He removed to Ohio when a young man and was married at Marietta in 1850 to Mary J. HOLIDAY (sic - HOLLIDAY). The wife died in this city several years ago. They were the parents of three children, two of whom are living--Mrs. Ed. HAMILTON of Elgin, Ill., and Mrs. Cynthia L. HAMMOND of this city. The family came to Fairfield in 1858 and its residence here since that time had been unbroken. During all these years, until a short time ago, Mr. GIBELOW operated a shoe shop on North Court street. He had a great love for music and was a member of various musical organizations here--bands, orchestras, etc. He had been a member of the order of Odd Fellows for sixty years and was connected with Jefferson lodge, No. 4, for almost half a century. Mr. BIGELOW was a man of undoubted honest and the highest integrity. He had won many warm friendships during his long residence here and the friends who sympathized with him in his long illness will regret his death.

Samuel BIGELOW Dead.

Samuel E. BIGELOW, an aged pioneer resident of Fairfield died at his home here Saturday morning at the age of 82.

He was a native of Massachusetts, born in 1825, and passed his boyhood days in his native state. He found his bride in Marietta, Ohio, and was married there to Mary S. HOLIDAY (sic - Mary Jane HOLLIDAY), who died some years ago. Two daughters survive the parents: Mrs. Susan HAMILTON of Elgin, Ill., and Mrs. Cynthia HAMMOND, of this city, with whom Mr. BIGELOW made his home.

In 1858 Samuel BIGELOW established himself in the boot and shoe business here and only gave up working at his trade a few years ago when he was compelled to do so by failing health. He was a member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows the past sixty years. The last forty-five years his building, where he formerly had his shoe shop, has been a familiar landmark on North Court Street, and like its owner, it has for several years past shown the wear and tear of time.

Funeral services were conducted from the home Monday afternoon in charge of Rev. Pearse Pinch, and the local order of I. O. O. F., of which he was a member, had charge of the services at the cemetery.
