GUS UNKRICH, ONCE MAYOR, DIES AT HOME

Gus C. UNKRICH, former mayor of Fairfield, passed away early this morning at his home, 806 S. Fifth street, after a serious illness of more than a year. He had been in failing health for two years.

Besides serving the community as mayor for one term, UNKRICH also served as councilman from third ward for two terms, or a period of four years.

He was first elected as alderman on March 29, 1937, and took office on April 5 the same year. He was re-elected to that post in March, 1939, for a second term.

Two years later the Fairfield jeweler announced his candidacy for mayor and was elected to that post in March, 1941, and served for two years.

UNKRICH operated a watch repair shop a half block east of the square on Broadway for many years, and always took an active part in community affairs. He closed his shop and retired from business in October, 1948, because of ill health.

The former mayor was a member of the Baptist church, I.O.O.F. Lodge No. 4, and Hawkeye Rebekah No. 396 (sic - 386?).

Last rites will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. at the Hoskins funeral home with A. K. Harper in charge. Burial will be in the Lockridge cemetery.

Gustavus Clyde UNKRICH, 72, was born November 14, 1877, in Jefferson county, the son of the late Henry and Jane STURGIS UNKRICH. He had been a resident of Fairfield since 1909.

He was united in marriage on October 16, 1901, to Hulda NEWBURG, who survives. The wedding took place at Ottumwa.

Besides his wife, he is survived by two sons, Clyde H. of Sacramento, California; and Glen W. who resides west of Fairfield. He is also survived by five grandchildren, one brother, Clinton UNKRICH, Miami, Florida; and a sister, Mrs. Lena FRENCH, Akron, Ohio.

*Transcribed for genealogy purposes; I have no relation to the person(s) mentioned.

Note: Hulda died in 1961 and is also buried in Lockridge Cemetery.
