REID Child Is City’s First Traffic Victim In 5 Years

Fairfield today counted its first fatal traffic accident in five years as a result of the death of Marcia REID, 5-year-old girl who was killed when hit by a jeep near her home yesterday afternoon.

The accident victim is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Carl REID who reside at 308 W. Madison street.

The jeep was driven by Carrie Jane Nady, Fairfield, a Parsons college student. She was accompanied by two other students, Jackie Cullion, Chariton; and Kay Ryan, Mountain Grove, Mo. The jeep was going west on Madison when the accident occurred.

The driver of the jeep told officers the child ran in front of the vehicle and she had no time to apply the brakes to avoid hitting the little girl.

Witnesses who saw the accident said the jeep was traveling at an average speed and was not traveling in excess of the speed limit.

The little girl was playing in the parking of the Dr. John Castell residence across the street and to the east of her home. Dr. Castell said all at once the child darted out into the street, apparently not seeing the jeep approaching from the east.

Dr. Castell, who was trimming a bush in his front yard, said he called to the little girl but she apparently didn’t hear him. She ran directly in front of the vehicle.

Dr. Castell picked the little girl off the street and carried her to her home. An ambulance was called and she was rushed to the hospital where she died on arrival. Her death came about 3:35 (? – film scratched) p.m.

Coroner Jack Raymond said her death was caused by a skull fracture. Early this morning he said as far as he knew there would be no inquest.

Yesterday’s fatal traffic accident was the first in Fairfield since Oct. 29, 1949. That victim too was a little girl. She was Dianna Sue Walker who was killed while crossing Burlington street at D. She was on her way to a Halloween party. The car was driven by Harvey S. Smith, Ottumwa.
