W. E. RAINES, former Fairfield grocer and well-known livestock buyer, passed away Thursday (note: April 1st) at Hawthorne, Calif., where he and Mrs. RAINES had been visiting their son and family during the winter.
Word received here said he passed away following an emergency operation. They had planned to start home about the time he became ill.
The body will be returned to Fairfield for last rites and burial, but the time of arrival has not been set.
W. E. “Ed” RAINES, 85, was born Sept. 23, 1874. He spent most of his life in Fairfield, operating a grocery store for several years. After retiring from the business he was a livestock dealer and buyer.
Mr. and Mrs. RAINES went to California the latter part of January to visit their two sons and families and other relatives. They headquartered at Hawthorne.
He is survived by four children, Glenn at Hawthorne; Donald who resides at Woodland Hills; Mrs. Gladys PHILLIPS, Davenport; and Mrs. John CALHOUN, Burlington. Two brothers and two sisters also survive. They are Fred and Rodney RAINES, both of Fairfield; Mrs. Iva WHITE and Mrs. Dollie BOTEMAN, both of California.

Note: Mrs. RAINES was formerly Clarrah C. CAVINESS. She died in 1963 and they are buried in Evergreen Cemetery, Fairfield, in Lot 3rd.202½. Although the spelling of RAINES is used in the obituary, the actual spelling is RAINS; the gravestone uses the RAINS spelling.
