Olive LEECH Is Killed At Ft. Madison

Olive LEAVE (sic – LEECH), 55, well known Fairfield resident, was fatally injured in an auto crash at Fort Madison early this morning.

The accident took place at 8:28 a.m. at a highway insection (sic) within the city. She was rushed to the Sacred Heart hospital where she passed away at 11:30 a.m.

Reports said she suffered a compound fracture of the left leg, broken right arm, a ruptured liver and loss of blood.

First reports reaching here just before 11 a.m. said she was in serious condition and undergoing surgery at the hospital. The report of her death reached here shortly after 11:30.

She had taken her sister, Mrs. Mabel EARLEY, to Fort Madison to catch a train, and was returning to her work at the Triangle Construction quarry near Stockport in Van Buren county.

Reports concerning the accident said she was traveling north on 18th street in Ft. Madison and apparently failed to see a stop sign. The report went on to say her car entered the intersection against a red light and it was hit by another car, traveling east on Avenue E, and driven by John H. Whitson, Fort Madison.

Miss LEECH was driving her sister’s car. The impact bounced the Earley car up over the curb and it came to rest against a guy-wire for a telephone pole. The other car spun around but did not roll over. Whitson was not injured.

Miss LEECH was thrown from her car and one of the wheels apparently ran over her leg. She was rushed to the Sacred Heart hospital in Fort Madison.

Her sister, Mrs. EARLEY, a few minutes before had boarded a train for St. Louis where she was going to visit her daughter who is in nurses training there.

The body will be returned to the Weston Behner funeral home where last rites are pending.

She is survived by one brother and three sisters: Victor LEECH, Fairfield; Mrs. Joe EMERSON and Mrs. Mabel EARLEY, both of Fairfield, and Mrs. Dick WILLIAMSON, Liberia, Africa.
