DEATH COMES TO FAIRFIELD BUSINESSMAN

Death came this morning to a well known Fairfield retail merchant. He is E. C. LEBER, 66, who had operated the Leber department store on the northeast corner of the square for over 30 years.

Mr. LEBER had been in failing health for some time and suffered a stroke two weeks ago. His condition had remained critical since that time.

He suffered another attack Saturday and he was taken to the Jefferson county hospital Sunday where he passed away at 5:30 a.m. today.

Mr. LEBER came to Fairfield from Champaign, Illinois, where he managed a Woolworth store for several years. He purchased the business here in Fairfield known as the Huffstleder (sic – Huffstedler) & Baker firm which occupied the building where the Leber store is now located.

The former business was sold when Mr. Huffstleder (sic) passed away in 1919.

Last rites for Mr. LEBER will be held Thursday at 1:30 p.m. at the Presbyterian church with Dr. C.R. Douglass in charge. The body will then be taken to Muscatine where graveside services will be held at the Greenwood cemetery at 4:30 p.m.

The body will be taken from the Hoskins funeral home to the church at 1 p.m. on the day of the services.

Edward Charles LEBER was born May 8, 1883, at Springfield, Illinois, the son of the late Edward and Katherine MUSIC LEBER. He was united in marriage June 10, 1909, to Mabyl VAN ATTA who survives.

Mr. LEBER had four primary interests in life. His home came first, then his store, the Rotary club and its activities, and his garden. He also took an active part in community affairs, and gave quietly to charitable organizations.

He was a member of the Presbyterian church, the Masons and Rotary club.

Besides his wife, Mr. LEBER is survived by two brothers, Alfred and Robert, both of Springfield, Illinois, and three nephews.
