OBITUARY

HAYDEN DOUGHTY

Calvin Hayden DOUGHTY was born January 5, 1849, in Cedar township, Jefferson County, Iowa, and died at his home in Fairfield, November 1, 1923, after an illness of nearly two years.

He was converted to Christ in early boyhood in a revival meeting held at the Bethesda church near this city. He united with this society and remained a member till (sic) he joined the Free Methodist church at the Bradshaw school house fifty-five years ago. The Bradshaw class, as it was then called, was afterwards merged into the Free Methodist church at Fairfield.

From the time he was twelve years of age he made his own way in the world. On October 5, 1864, although but a lad of sixteen years, he enlisted in his countrys (sic) service as a soldier in the Civil War, at Springfield, Illinois, whither he had gone with Company C of the Second Illinois Light Artillery. His command did duty at Fort Donelson until August 3, 1865, when he received his discharge in Springfield where he had enlisted.

At the close of the war he returned to Jefferson county, and December 13, 1866, he married Miss Mary O. STANFORD. They have had no children of their own. By an adopted son they have five grandchildren. Mrs. Hayden DOUGHTY, the son Mark, and the grandchildren are all living.

Mr. DOUGHTY, as to occupation, was first a farmer which he very succesfully (sic) continued to be until about thirty years ago when he moved to Fairfield. He afterwards engaged in the insurance and real estate business. For a number of years he has been retired and not actively engaged in any occupation but his own personal business.

The life of the deceased has always been of a high moral character. He was a good neighbor, an honored citizen, a sincere Christian and loyal church member, a loving husband and affectionate father. His place on earth is now empty and he will be greatly missed by all who knew and associated with him. In his last expiring moments he assured his weeping friends who stood by his deathbed that he was going to Heaven, and expressed a wish to his beloved wife that she could go along with him.

The funeral services were conducted by Rev. Lewis Mendenhall at the home, 303 South Court street at 2:30 o’clock Monday afternoon, November 5, 1923. Interment in Evergreen cemetery.
