Dorothy Bernice CURRAN passed away on the morning of February 22, 2011 at Rochelle Community Hospital, Rochelle, IL with loved ones present, at the age of 89.
Dorothy was born in Fairfield, IA to Clifford and Gladys ST. CLAIR BROWN. Dorothy was a graduate of Fairfield High School, Class of 1939. She then attended the Iowa Success School in Ottumwa, IA. Upon graduation, Dorothy was employed by the John Morrell Company as a bookkeeper. Dorothy went on to work for the City of Ottumwa at City Hall and as a secretary for Wapello County Public Health Nursing.
Dorothy was united in marriage to the love of her life, John Brady CURRAN, on her 24th birthday, June 14, 1945. Dorothy and J.B. raised a family of 8 children. Michael CURRAN of Guntersville, AL, Patrick (Jenette) CURRAN of Ottumwa, Dennis CURRAN of Phoenix, AZ, Nancy CURRAN-MAINES, Mary Jo (Gregory) CURRAN-FOLKERS of Rochelle, IL, Kevin (Laura) CURRAN of Fairfield, Joseph (Brenda) CURRAN of Ottumwa, Rose CURRAN-BATES of Edwardsville, IL. Dorothy was blessed with 20 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren.
Dorothy was known for being an outstanding cook, an avid reader and devout Christian. No one could beat "Grandma Curran's" homemade noodles and rolls. Dorothy thoroughly enjoyed spending time at the gambling boat and at Herberger's shopping. Dorothy had a love of life which she shared with her many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Dorothy also had a love for all Iowa Hawkeye sports teams and a special love for her dog, Rona. She spent her entire life on Iowa soil, until she came to Illinois in January to spend her last days with her daughter.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband, John B. CURRAN, daughter, Nancy CURRAN-MAINES, granddaughter, Hillary CURRAN and brother, Don BROWN.
Funeral Mass will be 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Mary of the Visitation with Father Bernie Weir presiding. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery.
Visitation will begin at 1 p.m. Friday at Reece Funeral Home with the family present from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday. A Christian Wake service will be held at 7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Mary of the Visitation in Ottumwa or Passages Hospice LLC, 929 S. Alpine Rd., Suite 202, Rockford, IL 61108.
