“The Fairfield Ledger”,
February 25, 1942

VICTOR A. ROOT

Victor Arthur ROOT was the eldest son of the late A. C. and Elizabeth MAXWELL ROOT, born in Defiance County, Ohio, April 10, 1867.

When he was still a small child the family came to Jefferson county, locating near where Beckwith now is. It was here that he spent his childhood days.

He was united in marriage to Miss Nellie HOOPES and they remained a devoted and happy coupe (sic) for 44 years. This union was broken when the devoted wife and mother was taken by death. From this shock he never fully recovered.

Three years before the death of his wife, the oldest daughter, Mrs. Blanche NELSON, passed away at her home near Lucas, Iowa.

On March 8, 1938 another daughter Mrs. Frances COMSTOCK passed away with a baby in her arms.

Scarcely had another year passed, until he was forced to part with his last daughter Mrs. Beulah GREEN. Life since then has held no pleasure for Mr. ROOT, his ambition and hopes were gone. He has always lived on a farm and enjoyed farming.

About 16 months ago, he had a serious illness from which he never fully recovered. He suffered a light stroke of paralysis on Monday but shortly recovered from it, on Wednesday, Feb. 18, 1942 another severe stroke followed and he was immediately taken to the Jefferson county hospital in Fairfield, where everything was done for him.

He passed away Tuesday night, February 24th at 10 o’clock and the Master said “Well done Thou good and faithful servant, come up higher.”

He with his family have been members of the Methodist church since Rev. Wilkins protracted meetings sometime in the ‘80s

Mr. ROOT was a good, and kind husband and father, excellent neighbor, always ready to help in case of need.

Thus a good man has gone to his reward leaving five grandchildren, one brother, Dell ROOT, and one sister, Mrs. Jennie PRINCE, both of near Beckwith, to mourn his loss.

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Saturday, February 28th in the Hoskins Funeral Home with Rev. C. E. Teel, pastor of the M. E. Circuit in charge. Mrs. Arthur Lenhart and Mrs. Darrell Whitaker sang “We Are Going Down The Valley” accompanied by Mrs. Mervin Hollander. Burial was in Evergreen cemetery.
