MRS. VICTOR ROOT

Nellie Ivy HOOPES was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Charles HOOPES. She was born on a farm east of Fairfield, Iowa, on Oct 16-1869 (sic). Her mother died when she was a few months old. The grandparents Mr. and Mrs. George McCLAIN took the little one into their home, and gave to her a loving mother’s care. She spent a few years in Beatrice, Nebraska at her father’s home and also stayed with an aunt at Iola, Kansas. But she always loved Jefferson County and the rest of her life was spent here where she grew to womanhood and at the early age of eighteen she was united in marriage to the one of her choice, Victor ROOT. They, having been school-day lovers, which still continued all through life. The first real sorrow that visited them was when the oldest daughter, Mrs. Blanche Lucille NELSON was called to her heavenly home, and from this shock of the loss of her loved one, Mrs. ROOT never fully recovered.

Although she never complained yet that dreaded disease, “High blood-pressure,” was working in her system. She had been informed by the best of medical skill, that her health was in a very serious condition, and that paralysis might be near at any time. To this she answered, ‘Well I am ready, I have to make no preparations to die,” What a grand expression. She little thought that in less than one week this would be true. On Friday she complained of not feeling well, but she finished writing a letter to her absent daughter. That evening she suffered a stroke of paralysis, from which she never recovered. Everythig (sic) was done that could be done, but alas! for two days and nights she hovered between life and death until early Monday morning, she quietly and peacefully fell asleep to awake with her loved ones in that heavenly home

Since the ROOT home, which was established on December 31-1887, (sic) Jefferson County has always been their home. It was Mrs. ROOT’s pleasure to often recall that day the beginning of which has proved to be a more than an ordinary happy home life, that lacked only a few days of being 44 years. Mrs. ROOT was a lover of good reading and music. Only a few weeks ago while visiting a friend she sat down at the organ, played and sang some of the old familiar songs of girlhood days. She remarked “Why I hardly knew that I remembered the words to those songs.”

A good wife, ever throughtful of her husband; A devoted mother living her life over again, with enjoyment and interest, in the lives of her five grand-children, has passed from us. But she will ever live in our memory as a woman whose character was an example to follow. She was a life-long member of the Methodist church.

Besides her husband she leaves, two daughters, Mrs. Beulah GREEN of Fairfield, Iowa and Mrs. Frances COMSTOCK of Des Moines, Ia.

A step-mother, Mrs. Mary E. HOOPES, a half-sister Mrs. June MONTGOMERY of Lincoln, Neb. a half-brother, Merton HOOPES of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, an uncle R. F. McCLAIN of Denver, Colorado, an aunt, Mrs. Lucy McCLAIN McFATRIDGE of Los Angeles, Cal. beside a host of relatives, friends and neighbors.

*Transcribed for genealogy purposes; I have no relation to the person(s) mentioned.

Note: Her husband Victor died in 1942, and they are buried in Lot 3rd.100. Mrs. ROOT can be found in most sources with the given name of Nellie, and middle name of either Iva or Ivy. In the initial obituary she is referred to as Mary Iva.
