AGED RESIDENT OF FAIRFIELD BURIED SUNDAY

Funeral for Mrs. J. W. QUILLEN, Well Known in City, Held Yesterday

Martha J. QUILLEN 92, aged resident of Fairfield, passed away at 4 o’clock Friday afternoon at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Ed HERMAN, 400 East Kirkwood street. She had been in poor health for the past six weeks but was not seriously ill until just a few days preceding her death.

Funeral services were held from the HERMAN home yesterday afternoon at 2:30 o’clock in charge of Dr. U. S. Smith, pastor of the First Methodist church of which she was the oldest living member, joining when 15 years of age. Dr. Smith was assisted by Rev. Toothacre of Burlington, an old friend of the family.

Pallbearers at the funeral were Harley Carter, Lee Bradshaw, J. W. Stallman, William Wells, Will Neibert and Walter Harris. Burial was in Evergreen cemetery.

Mrs. QUILLEN was preceded in death by her husband, John W. QUILLEN, who passed away 2_ (26? Right edge of column trimmed a bit) years ago (he died in 1904). She is survived by four children, Elmer E., Luther and Mrs. HERMAN of Fairfield, and Charles W. of Mt. Pleasant. She also leaves one sister, Mrs. Eliza FREEMAN of Paola, Kan., and one brother, John N. FRUSH of Fairfield.

She was born at Belmont in Monroe county, Ohio and with her parents Mr. and Mrs. John W. FRUSH, came west to Iowa when only nine years of age. Arriving at Keokuk by the water route the travelers came straight to Jefferson county overland and settled on what is now known as the “old FRUSH farm,” 2 (2½? – column trimmed again) miles northeast of Fairfield. Mr. FRUSH paid six dollars an acre for his land, securing it through George Crane, then government agent here.

She married John W. QUILLEN on June 9, 1870. Mr. QUILLEN moved to Fairfield from Bentonsport. For many years he was a wool buyer for the Amana colony. Later he was a Fairfield Methodist preacher.
