Ray H. MAXWELL, Retired Grocer, Dies In Arkansas

Ray H. MAXWELL, retired Fairfield grocer and native of Jefferson county, passed away yesterday afternoon at the home of his son oat Rogers, Ark., where he had arrived less than a week ago to make his home.

During the past several years Mr. MAXWELL made his home at 306 W. Briggs street. Recently he closed his home and lived temporarily with his son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Ralph MAXWELL at 802 W. Grimes. Ralph accompanied his father to Rogers last Saturday and returned home Sunday.

Mr. MAXWELL was going to make his home with his son, Charles, who had just moved to Rogers after his retirement from the post office at Chicago.

Ray MAXWELL was in the grocery business in Fairfield for over a half century, operating his own store on the south side of the square for 33 years. He was also active in civic affairs and took an active part in community events while he was in business.

He was born Sept. 23, 1873, in Jefferson county, the son of the late Harvey and Christina (sic – Christena) KAUFFMAN MAXWELL. He was married to Mary E. SPENCER on Sept. 2, 1895. She passed away July 17, 1921.

He was married a second time to Ella Elizabeth PACE in 1924. She died Dec. 7, 1944.

Ray H. MAXWELL, 83, was a member of the First Methodist church, Knights of Pythias and a charter member of the Fairfield Rotary club. He is survived by three sons: Charles H., Rogers, Ark.; Raymond E., San Diego, Calif., and Ralph W., Fairfield. He is also survived by three grandchildren and a brother, Harley, Joliet, Ill. He was preceded in death by one daughter, three brothers and a sister.

The body is being returned to the Weston Behner Funeral home where last rites are pending.
