Death Comes To Charles CLAPP

Death came this morning to Charles CLAPP, long-time resident of Fairfield and pioneer railroad man who operated the first train into Deadwood, S. Dak.

His death about 8 a.m. this morning followed an illness of about two years. He had been critically ill the past 10 days.

Charles CLAPP, 91, was born March 4, 1866, on the CLAPP homestead east of Fairfield. He was the son of the late James W. and Samantha J. McCORMICK CLAPP, early residents of the community.

He attended rural schools in Jefferson county, then went to Chadron, Neb., where he was a railroad man for a number of years. It was during this time that he operated the first engine into Deadwood.

He and Pearl RUSSELL were united in marriage at Chadron on March 14, 1891. In 1898 they returned to Jefferson county and lived on the CLAPP farm for a number of years. They moved to Fairfield in 1919 and he was an interior decorator and painter for a number of years prior to his retirement.

Mr. CLAPP was a member of the Methodist church, the Odd Fellows lodge, the Rebekahs and the Golden Wedding club.

Mr. and Mrs. CLAPP were the parents of three daughters: Blanche, who died in infancy; Mrs. Mildred CASTILE who passed away in 1942; and Mrs. Glen SHAFER, Fairfield, who survives.

Other survivors include the following: six grandchildren, nine great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews, and a brother, the Rev. W. L. CLAPP, Washington, Iowa.

The body is at the Weston Behner funeral home where last rites are pending.
