Geo. J. BONFIELD, Prominent Fairfield Merchant, Dies
Funeral Services Will Be Saturday At St. Mary’s Church

George J. BONFIELD, 63, for many years a Fairfield merchant, passed away at his home, 904 East Burlington street, at 5:30 a.m. today. Death followed a long period of ill health.

Mr. BONFIELD was a partner with C. W. Wade in the Fair Department Store for the past 27 years. Prior to his association with Mr. Wade, he was with the J. C. Thorne drygoods company.

Mr. BONFIELD was born in Fairfield on June 10, 1873. He is survived by his wife and one son, George J. Jr. Four sisters also survive. They are the Misses Margaret, Katherine, Elizabeth and Nellie BONFIELD. A brother, Thomas, died 21 years ago.

Funeral services will be held Saturday morning at 9:30 o’clock from the St. Mary’s Catholic church, in charge of the Rev. Fr. E. P. Seidel of East Pleasant Plain. Burial will be in Evergreen cemetery. The funeral arrangements are in charge of the Murray Funeral Home.

Mr. BONFIELD’s father was a successful merchant, who had been apprenticed to the business in County Tipperary, Ireland. He came to New York, and worked for a time in the famous old A. T. Stewart store. Then he came west to Burlington, where he built up a business, and later established a branch in Fairfield.

He moved to Fairfield from Burlington and erected a three story building on the southeast corner of the square. The father was hard hit by the panic of 1873, so when young George was 14 years old he went to work for J. C. Thorne. He remained with Mr. Thorne for 16 years, after which he joined Mr. Wade in the present partnership.

Mr. BONFIELD took an active part in community affairs. He was a Rotarian; a member of the Chamber of Commerce in which he served as an officer; he was also an officer in the Retail Merchants association; treasurer, and a trustee, in the old Fairfield Chautauqua Assn.; and a member of the St. Mary’s Catholic church here. During the World War he was treasurer of the United War Fund.
