MARILYN BLAIR DROWNS SUNDAY IN IOWA CITY
Funeral services for Fairfield girl Tuesday at 2:30 p.m.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday afternoon at 2:30 o’clock for Marilyn Jean BLAIR, 12-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Verle (sic - Verl) A. BLAIR of this city, who drowned in Big Dipper pool near Iowa City about 4 o’clock Sunday afternoon.

Services will be held in Pleasant Grove church north of the city, in charge of Rev. J. W. Stine and Dr. M. A. Gable. Burial will be in Evergreen cemetery. The body will be at the Hoskins funeral home until time for the services.

The girl had gone to Iowa City with her parents and grandparents to attend the KESSLER reunion in that city. The Big Dipper pool is on the edge of the park where the reunion was held.

According to reports to officers, Marilyn got into deep water with a younger sister, and both went under. A boy swimming nearby pulled the younger sister out, but did not learn of Marilyn’s plight in time to rescue her.

Pool officials stated that after being pulled out, the younger sister went directly to her mother, and told of Marilyn’s sinking. Mrs. BLAIR then called the lifeguard.

The lifeguard, Sidney Miller, had been reprimanding a swimmer in another part of the pool for infractions of the diving rules of the pool. His attention first was called to the drowning by the girl’s mother, he said.

The girl’s body was found at the bottom of the pool by Ed Noack. She had been under for three or four minutes ,it was stated (sic). Iowa City firemen, police, and the Johnson county coroner, Dr. George C. Callahan, worked over the child’s body with artificial respiration and an inhalator for more than 50 minutes. Dr. Callahan indicated that no inquest will be held.

Marilyn Jean was born Sept. 12, 1927, in Fairfield, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Verle (sic) A. BLAIR. She is survived by her parents, three sisters, Carolyn Joyce, Doris, and Dixie, and by both her maternal and paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. J. L. MIKSCH and Mr. and Mrs John M. BLAIR. The Verle (sic) BLAIRs live about six miles northeast of Fairfield.
