CLYDE C. BELL DIED SUNDAY AT IOWA CITY
Services Wednesday for Fairfield Justice of the Peace

Clyde C. BELL, 60, Justice of the Peace for Fairfield, passed away Sunday afternoon about 12:55 o’clock, at the University Hospital in Iowa City, after a lingering illness. He had been in poor health for several years, and seriously ill for the past four weeks.

Funeral services will be held at the First Methodist church on Wednesday, at 2 p.m. Dr. M. A. Gable will be in charge of the services. The body was taken to the Weston Behner Funeral Home.

Clyde Charles BELL was born Jan. 12, 1880, at Rome, the son of the late Thomas and Ida BELL. He moved from Rome to Fairfield where he has made his home for the past 40 years.

For twelve years he was a county recorder for Jefferson county. Later, he became Justice of the Peace for Fairfield, and served in that capacity for the past six years. He was reelected at the last general election on November 5. Mr. BELL remained actively engaged in his work until October 23. He was an active member of the I. O. O. F., and also a member of the Methodist church of Fairfield.

In 1930 Mr. BELL was installed as Grand Patriarch of the encampment branch of Odd Fellowship for the state of Iowa. He had under him 135 lodges, with 6,000 members.

He is survived by his wife, Mabel and four children, Mrs. Helen WATSON of Richland, Mrs. Marjorie SNUGGS of Fairfield, Paul BELL of Algona, and Harold BELL of Des Moines; two sisters and one brother, Mrs. J. H. STAPLETON of San Antonio, Texas, Mrs. Abe VanDYKE of Moline, Ill. and Troy E. BELL of Rock Island, Ill. Five grandchildren also survive.

OBITUARY

Clyde C. BELL

Clyde Charles BELL, the oldest of four children of the late Thomas and Ida BELL was born on January 12th, 1880 in Rome, Iowa.

He passed away at Iowa City, Iowa, Sunday, November 24th, 1940 after a lingering illness. At the time of his death he was 60 years, 11 months and 12 days.

His early life was spent in the vicinity of Rome and Mt. Pleasant, Iowa. He then came to Fairfield where he has made his home for many years.

He was united in marriage to Mabel ABRAHAM on June 10, 1903. To this union were born four children, Helen, Paul, Harold and Marjorie. Besides his wife and children, he is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Abe VanDYKE of Moline, Illinois, and Mrs. John STAPLETON of San Antonio, Texas, and one brother Troy E. BELL of Rock Island, Illinois. He also had 6 grandsons, Eugene, Keith and Gordon WATSON, Richard and Ronald BELL, and Harold Minor BELL Jr.

For twelve years he served as County Recorder for Jefferson Co. Following this he became Justice of the Peace, which he was serving at the time of his death.

He was an active member in the I. O. O. F. serving as "Grand Patriarch" of Iowa in 1930-1931.

He was a kind and loving father, a devoted husband, a faithful friend and companion. He will be greatly missed by a host of relatives and close friends.

Funeral services were held at the Methodist Church on Wednesday afternoon at 2:00 o'clock conducted by Dr. M. A. Gable and Lynn Irwin. Two hymns, "Sometime We'll Understand" and "Sweetly Resting" were sung by George Van Nostrand with Mrs. Patti Pagel assisting at the piano.

Pallbearers were Roll Edwards Roll Ireland, Gus Unkrich, Malcolm Nelson, Charles Carter and W. C. Hoswell.

Interment was at the Evergreen Cemetery.
