Mary Evalyn SHAFER, 86, died Saturday, Jan. 22, 2011, at Good Samaritan Society-Van Buren in Keosauqua.
A funeral will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Frist United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Mike Metz officiating. Burial will be in Bethesda Cemetery, east of Fairfield.
Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. Wednesday at Behner Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church, Fairfield Senior Citizen Center, Bonnifield Log House, Carnegie Historial Museum or Maasdam Barns Restoration Committee. Cards and memorials may be sent to 2369 270th St., Birmingham 52535.

Mrs. SHAFER was born Nov. 28, 1924, in Fairfield, the daughter of William J. and Edna ULM SUMMERS. She married R. Keith SHAFER Sept. 26, 1948, at Pleasant Grove Methodist Church, north of Fairfield.
Mrs. SHAFER graduated from Fairfield High School with the class of 1943 and attended Parsons College. She taught in rural Jefferson County schools for five years. She and her husband farmed.
Mrs. SHAFER was a lifelong member of Pleasant Grove Methodist Church until its closing. She was a member of Fairfield's First United Methodist Church, Jefferson County Farm Bureau Women, Jefferson County Republican Central Committee and Jefferson County Rural Water District.
Survivors include her husband; four sons: Mark SHAFER and wife Susan of Fairfield, Herb SHAFER and wife Jan of Mount Pleasant, Lynn SHAFER and wife Leslie BROWN of New Glouchester, Maine, and Allen SHAFER and wife Alison of Des Moines; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
