OBITUARY

Mrs. Valeria AXLINE

Mrs. Valeria AXLINE was born in Pottsville, Pa. April 25, 1848. She passed to her eternal reward at 3:00 p.m. Saturday, January 22, 1944 at the home of her daughter Mrs. J. W. OGLE, 303 East Hempstead Street, Fairfield, Iowa. She was nearly 96 years of age.

She was the daughter of Mr. F. B. HUNTZINGER and his wife Sarah. When Valeria HUNTZINGER was about eight years of age the family moved from Pennsylvania to Fairfield, Iowa to make their home. Here her father operated a flour mill at the location where the Lutheran church now stands.

Valeria HUNTZINGER grew to young womanhood in this community. On December 28, 1869 she was united in marriage to Dr. W. H. AXLINE in Fairfield. Her husband had served in the Civil War, going as a substitute for a drafted man, when a youth of 17. Following their marriage they established their home in Attica, Iowa where Dr. AXLINE was a practicing physician most of his life. There was a short period of a few years when they lived in Red Oak, where he practiced his profession. They had returned again to Attica and had been there for many years when Dr. AXLINE suffered a stroke which proved fatal. His death occurred on September 26 (sic - Sept. 6th), 1921. Shortly after that Mrs. AXLINE moved to Fairfield to make her home with her daughter.

Her life was very closely knit with the origin and founding of the Lutheran Church in Fairfield. The HUNTZINGER were members of the Lutheran Church in Pennsylvania, and were deeply interested in establishing a church of that denomination in their new home. It was her parents, Mr. and Mrs. F. B. HUNTZINGER who gave the lots on which the Lutheran Church and parsonage now stand. These were only a part of their contribution to the establishing of the Lutheran Church in Fairfield, but a concrete evidence of their deep interest in and devotion to their church. The original HUNTZINGER mill in Fairfield was destroyed by fire, and was rebuilt in the "New Chicago" area. A bronz (sic) plate on the lecturn at the church bears the inscription: "In Memory of Father and Mother HUNTZINGER from their children."

Another link which connects Mrs. AXLINE with the Lutheran Church in Fairfield is in her marriage. The Rev. Andrew AXLINE was the first pastor of the church. He served for nearly 18 years -- 1845-1872. Dr. W. H. AXLINE her husband was a nephew of Rev. Andrew AXLINE, and for several years during his young manhood W. H. AXLINE made his home with his uncle.

Mrs. AXLINE was privileged to live much longer than most people. Even though her sight and hearing were greatly impaired, and her strength waning, her mind was clear and keen to the end of her life. She was vitally interested in the affairs of the world until the last few weeks when she was confined to her bed. She enjoyed life. She was a kind, patient and devoted wife and mother. She was faithful and loyal to her church always. While she never complained she was eager to "go home" to be with her Saviour and those who had gone on before.

Mrs. AXLINE was preceded in death by one daughter, Sarah who died in infancy in 1871; her husband who died September 26 (sic - 6), 1921; five sisters and one brother. She is survived by one brother, Mr. F. J. HUNTZINGER of Enid, Oklahoma, and one daughter, Mrs. J. W. OGLE of Fairfield, Iowa.

Funeral services were held at the Hoskins Funeral Home Tuesday at 2:00 p.m. January 25, 1944, with Dr. E. A. Piper, pastor of the Lutheran church officiating. Mr. Maurice Long sang two songs--"Tis The Blessed Hour of Prayer" and "The End of a Perfect Day", both favorites of Mrs. AXLINE. Mrs. George Rowley accompanied him. The Pallbearers were: David Holgate, W. W. Lewis, W. Johnson, A. M. Clow, Cecil Johnson and Gust Schillerstrom. Burial was in Evergreen Cemetery beside her husband.
