Richard Dean BARNES, 73, of Fairfield, died Tuesday, Jan. 4, 2011, at Jefferson County Health Center in Fairfield.

Arrangements are pending at Behner Funeral Home in Fairfield.

Richard D. BARNES

Richard D. BARNES, 73, of Fairfield, died Tuesday, Jan. 4, 2011, at Jefferson County Health Center in Fairfield.

A memorial mass will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Mary Catholic Church, with the Rev. Stephen C. Page officiating. Burial of cremains will be at a later date in Maple Hill Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 9:30-10:30 a.m. Saturday at the church.

Memorials may be made to the Richard Barnes family. Cards and memorials may be sent to 207 Southgate C, Fairfield 52556.

Mr. BARNES was born Jan. 31, 1927, in Ottumwa, the son of Walter and Cordie NOLAN BARNES. He married Karen McFARLAND in 1960 in Ottumwa. They later divorced. He married Beverly K. POGEMILLER Sept. 2, 1983.

Mr. BARNES graduated from Ottumwa High School in 1955. He attended Indian Hills Community College, Iowa Tech and Parsons College. He worked for John Deere Ottumwa Works for 39 years, retiring in 1994. After retiring, he worked for Maintenance Engineering for 10 years.

Mr. BARNES served in the Iowa National Guard from 1958-1959.

He was a member of Ottumwa Elks Lodge, Knights of Columbus and St. Mary Catholic Church.

Mr. BARNES coached Little League. He enjoyed woodworking, working in his shop, watching all kinds of sports and watching his children and stepgrandchildren participate in sports. He was a Hawkeye, Dallas Cowboys and NASCAR fan.

Survivors include his wife; one son: Doug BARNES of Ottumwa; two stepchildren: Jackie GREENFIELD and husband Wes of Birmingham and Doug POGEMILLER of Austin, Texas; two grandchildren; six stepgrandchildren; one brother: Walter BARNES Jr. of Evergreen Colo.; and one sister: Kay ROUSH of Ottumwa.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one son: Denny BARNES.
