SMITH, Gary Lee -- Gary Lee SMITH, 70, of Washington, formerly of Brighton, died at midnight Thursday, Dec. 23, 2010, at McCreedy Home in Washington.

A funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Brighton First Church of God, with the Rev. Rick Zickefoose officiating. Burial will be in Hillcrest Cemetery following cremation.

Visitation will be 9:30-10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the church.

Memorials for the family may be left at the church or may be mailed to the family at 303 S. Farmer St., Apt. A2, Brighton 52540.

Arrangements are in the care of Gould Funeral Home of Brighton.

Mr. SMITH ws born Sept. 10, 1940, in Yarmouth, the son of Joseph Oliver and Ruth Ellen VOLGER SMITH. He married Cheryl STONE, and she later died.

Mr. SMITH was raised in the Coppock area. He graduated from Wayland High School in 1958. He worked as a carpenter.

Mr. SMITH served in the U.S. Air Force for six years.

He had been a member of the American Legion in Fairfield.

Mr. SMITH enjoyed hunting, fishing and finding mushrooms.

Survivors include one daughter: Tonya SMITH of Oregon; three sons: Gary HARREL of Cedar Rapids, Joseph SMITH and wife Sarah of Des Moines and Lincoln SMITH of Washington; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; three sisters: Connie SHELANGOSKI and Nancy KELLY, both of Brighton, and Peggy AMBROSE of North Liberty; and five brothers: Jerry SMITH, Dennie SMITH, Jack SMITH and Rick SMITH, all of Washington, and Tim SMITH of Brighton.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Shirley GORDON.
