BAXTER, Mervin Leon -- Mervin Leon BAXTER, 70, of rural Richland, died at 6:50 a.m. today, Tuesday, Nov. 23, 2010, at home.

Arrangements are pending at Gould Funeral Home in Richland.

BAXTER, Mervin Leon -- Mervin Leon BAXTER, 70, of rural Richland, died at 6:50 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 23, 2010, at home.

A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Pleasant Plain Friends Church in Pleasant Plain, with the Rev. Stan Bauer officiating. Burial will be in Brooks Cemetery near Hedrick.

Open visitation will begin at 4 p.m. Friday at Gould Funeral Home in Richland, with the family present from 5:30-7 p.m.

A general memorial has been established. Memorials may be left at the church or may be mailed to the family at 1070 Osage Ave., Richland 52585.

Mr. BAXTER was born Aug. 28, 1940, in Hedrick, the son of John Joseph and Elsie Mae REINER BAXTER. He married Marcine Louise McDOWELL Aug. 28, 1960, in Agency.

Mr. BAXTER grew up in the Hedrick area and attended Hedrick schools. He moved to the Pleasant Plain area in 1970. He worked at Crane Co. in Washington and later at Dexter Company in Fairfield. He also farmed for many years and enjoyed taking care of animals.

Mr. BAXTER enjoyed spending time outdoors, fishing, hunting and spending time with his grandchildren. While working at Ottumwa Regional Health Center, he was the first to start delivering meals on wheels to homes using his car.

Survivors include three sons: Jim BAXTER of Burlington, Joe BAXTER and wife Mary of Olathe, Kan., and Johnnie BAXTER and wife Michelle of Brighton; two daughters: Joyce MARTIN and husband Nick of Packwood and Jeanna JOHNSON and husband David of Richland; seven grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; and one brother: Melvin of Moscow.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one son: Jerry; one great-granddaughter; and one brother: Merlin.
