McCANLESS, Jeanne L. -- Jeanne L. McCANLESS, 78, of Oskaloosa, died Wednesday, Nov. 17, 2010, at home.
No service is planned. The body has been cremated.
Family visitation will be from 2-4 p.m. Saturday at Bates Funeral Chapel in Oskaloosa.
Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.
Mrs. McCANLESS was born Oct. 8, 1932, in Clinton, the daughter of Clarence and Fern SLAUGHTER SHERMAN. She married Alton McCANLESS Aug. 15, 1954, in Clinton.
Mrs. McCANLESS graduated from Clinton High School and University of Iowa, where she received a bachelor of music degree. She learned string instrument repairing while playing viola in the Ottumwa Heights string orchestra along with her husband and three children. She began teaching classes in various needlework skills in her kitchen and later opened The Needleworks store in Oskaloosa. The McCANLESSes purchased an acreage south of Oskaloosa and started a business in fiber production called Mostly Mohair. They had seven sheep, a few milk goats and mostly Angoras. Mrs. McCANLESS marketed her yarns at exhibitions for spinning and weaving shows and taught many classes in knitting, tatting and spinning in Fairfield at the At Home Store. She researched many systems of fabric and spinning wheels and became a consultant to many knitters.
Survivors include her husband; a son, Jamie McCANLESS and wife Kashmir WOLF of Madison, Wis.; a daughter, Wendy Frances WINZ and husband Greg of Dodgeville, Wis.; and a brother, Roger SHERMAN of Pryor, Okla.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and a son, Michael "The Fiddler" McCANLESS.
