Death takes B. HOFFMAN

J. Bruce HOFFMAN, 74, retired carpenter and a longtime resident of the Fairfield Community, died at 9:50 a.m. Sunday at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City. He had been in failing health the past two months.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Behner Funeral Home with the Rev. Clair Odell officiating. Interment will be in Evergreen Cemetery.

Family visitation will be Tuesday from 7 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Bruce HOFFMAN was born June 26, 1907, in Birmingham. He was the son of Frank and Dollie Ann SCHWARTZ HOFFMAN. He was united in marriage to Helen SCOVEL Aug. 27, 1954 in Fairfield. She survives.

HOFFMAN was a graduate of the Birmingham High School, he served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a member of the United Methodist Church and the Eagles Lodge. HOFFMAN was a farmer and carpenter before his retirement. The family home is at 1203 S. Sixth.

He was a great-great-grandson of George DONNER, leader of the ill-fated pioneer party for which DONNER Pass in California is named.

In addition to his widow, HOFFMAN is survived by a son, Robert Bruce HOFFMAN, Fairfield; three sisters, E. Blance (sic. Blanche??) HOFFMAN, Perry; Nellie B. MEACHEM, Richland; and Wilda L. DOWNEY, Fairfield.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister and a brother.
