Wednesday, October 14, 1896Death of Dr. MARTIN
Dr. George P. MARTIN, who has been a resident of this city since 1888, died Monday night, after a brief illness. Deceased was born in Bristol, Conn., January 7th, 1817, and had lived in various states of the Union before his removal to Fairfield. He had been a practicing physician for many years, and for two or three years of his life was a minister in the Baptist church. His aged wife survives him. Dr. MARTIN was a man of more than ordinary ability. He had won many friends during his brief residence here and his death will be very generally regretted by those who knew him best. The funeral will take place from the Baptist church this afternoon at 2 o'clock.

His full given name was George Phelps MARTIN. His wife is listed on the joint headstone inscription as being "JANE PHELPS MARTIN"; it isn't clear if for her the "PHELPS" was a maiden or middle name. It isn't known if the "PHELPS" in both of their names meant another level of familiy connection or just coincidence.
