Mrs. MARTIN, wife of a former pastor of the Baptist church of this city, died in Chicago Sabbath evening and her remains were brought to this city Monday and the funeral services were held from the residence of W.E. JOHNSON on East Burlington street Tuesday morning, conducted by Rev. F. E. Pelton. Her husband died in this city a few years ago.

*Transcribed for genealogy purposes. I am not related to the person(s) mentioned.

Note: Mrs. MARTIN can be found listed in an Evergreen Cemetery listing as "Miss" Jane PHELPS MARTIN. It isn't clear from the obituary nor the listing if PHELPS was a middle or maiden name. The use of "Miss" appears to be in error. The obituary was published on a Friday, Dec. 26, 1902; the cemetery listing provides a death date of Dec. 25, 1902. Given the timeline described in the obituary, it is likely that she died the previous week on the Sabbath evening.

The husband was Dr. George Phelps MARTIN, who was born in 1817 and died in Fairfield on Oct. 12, 1896. He had been a practicing physician for many years and also had become a minister in the Baptist church for the final two or three years of his life, according to his obituary.
