Death of James A. GALLIHER

James A. GALLIHER, who came to Jefferson county in 1838 and had resided here ever since, died at this home in this city Thursday morning after several years of failing health and a final illness of four months. Deceased would have been eighty years of age May 4th. He was born in Fleming county, Kentucky, where he grew to manhood and was married to Hannah MCKEE, who died in 1836. In 1832 he removed to Vermillion county, Ill., where he remained until attracted to Iowa by her many advantages and fertile soil. Coming to this state in 1838, he attended the first land sale made by the government, purchased a quarter section of land in Cedar township and entered another quarter. To this tract he brought his family two years later, and here he made his home for nearly half a century and until his removal to this city about two years ago. In 1839 he was married a second time, to Melinda B. ANDERSON, who survives him. Of a family of ten children, two by the first marriage and three by the second are now living: Mrs. Peter FISHER in this city, Mrs. Sarah E. YOUNG in Adair county, Mrs. Theresa TEMPLETON in Ottumwa, Mrs. Catherine A. TEMPLETON in Montana, and Mrs. Samantha GREEN in Kansas. Mr. GALLIHER was a man of vigorous constitution and unflagging energy, and after passing through the hardships of pioneer life he prospered and retired from active life with a competency. He was an Andrew JACKSON democrat in his politics, was elected sheriff of Jefferson county in 1857 and served one term, was for several years a member of the board of supervisors, and for eighteen years a justice of the peace in Cedar township. The remains were interred Friday in the cemetery at his old home, Rev. Lewis Mendenhall conducting the services.

Note: James A GALLIHER and several members of his extended family were buried on family owned property in a private cemetery.
