October 3, 1894Death of Samuel Jenks.
Samuel JENKS died quite unexpectedly at his home three miles east of the city Sunday morning. He had been ill for several weeks with typho-malarial fever, but was supposed to be convalescent. Saturday he suffered a relapse, and passed away almost before the danger of his condition was appreciated. Mr. JENKS was born in Franklin county, Indiana, November 18th, 1829, where he grew to manhood. He came to Jefferson county in 1853, and was married here to Mrs. De Lois A. HEATON (sic. Delois A. GALLIHER HEATON, widow of John HEATON), who survives him. Five children were born of the union, four of whom are now living - Ed. S. JENKS at Davenport; Mrs. Laura E. STEPHENSON at Mystic; Minnie B. and John S. JENKS in this county. During his residence of nearly half a century in this county Mr. JENKS had formed a wide circle of acquaintance, and was held in the highest esteem by all who came in contact with him. He was an industrious and progressive farmer, and was highly sucessful in everything he undertook. In his domestic life he was kind and affectionate, and he discharged every relation with the public as man and citizen with honesty and fidelity. His death will be very generally regretted, and the family will have a full measure of sympathy from the community. The remains were interred in the Evergreen cemetery, this city, yesterday morning, funeral services being held at the First Methodist church by Rev. E.L. Schreiner. The body was laid in the grave with the honors of masonry.

Transcriber observation: This contributor personally examined the 1894 probate file for Samuel JENKS and discovered that the probate file uses the surname "JINKS" in numerous documents and papers. Of special note was that there were several papers hand-signed by his widow that clearly used the "JINKS" spelling, as the dotted 'i' was present in the spelling. There were several such papers signed in that fashion and too many over a period of time to be dismissed as merely typos or carelessness. The obituary and headstone use the JENKS surname spelling, so the finding of "JINKS" in the probate file for Samuel may be of interest to anyone researching this family. /rkt 9/11/2010.
