Death of an Old Resident.

Samuel J. COOPER, a resident of Jefferson county and Fairfield for a third of a century, died at his home on West Burlington street in this city Thursday evening. He had been in poor health for several months and death came as a result of old age, he being in his eighty-third year. Mr. COOPER was a native of Maryland, being born in Talbott county January 26, 1818 (sic. the headstone date is Nov. 26, 1818; not sure how to reconcile the difference). In 1832 he was married there to Miss Caroline MOFFITT, who died several years later, and to them three children were born, two boys and one girl, only one of whom is living, W. H. COOPER of Ottumwa. Shortly after his marriage he removed to Pittsburgh, Penn., where he resided until his removal in ths county in 1868. In 1852 he was married to Miss Nancy McMULLEN. Of this marriage ten children, five boys and five girls, were born, all of whom are living except Mrs. Martha MITCHELL, who died in Colorado several months ago. The other children are Mrs. Elizabeth YOUNG, Gunnison, Col; S. B. COOPER, Holdrege, Neb.; John, Clarks, Neb.; Ellsworth, Florence, Col.; Robert, Lancaster, Mo.; Frank, Mary and Allie COOPER and Mrs. Nancy FOWLER of this city. Mr. COOPER was a man of many excellent qualities, a splendid citizen, and was held in high esteem by the many friends he had made during his residence of over thirty years in this community. For many years Mr. COOPER had been a member of the Baptist church. The funeral was held at his late home Saturday afternoon, the services being conducted by Rev. W. C. Shepherd, and the interment was made in the Evergreen cemetery.
