Veteran Attorney Dies In St. Paul

Death Comes Suddenly To R.C. LEGGETT

Richard C. LEGGETT, an attorney in Fairfield for nearly a half century and a former county attorney of Jefferson county, passed away suddenly this morning at St. Paul, Minn., where he had gone to attend the funeral of a sister.

He and another sister, Dr. Elizabeth LEGGETT, Santa Ana, Calif., had breakfast together at a hotel in St. Paul.

He returned to his hotel room, and when he didn't appear at the appointed time, his sister summoned hotel officials who forced open the door to his room. LEGGETT was dead when they found him.

Mr. LEGGETT went to St. Paul yesterday after receiving word of his sister's death. She was Mrs. Edwin R. MCKEE, who had passed away following a lengthy illness. Her funeral was held this afternoon.

LEGGETT's body is being returned to the Weston Behner funeral home which years ago was the LEGGETT home. Last rites are pending.

The prominent Fairfield attorney has been practicing law in this community for 46 years. He served as county attorney for two terms, was a member of the Iowa Bar and Jefferson County Bar associations.

In addition to his work as an attorney, LEGGETT was also well known as a lover of flowers and in years past spent many of his leisure hours in his garden. He was also interested in history and wrote many articles concerning the early history of Fairfield and Jefferson county.
