DEATHS.

Mrs. CUNNINGHAM.

Marietta SHOEMAKER was born at Monmouth, Illinois, November 27th, 1838. She was left an orphan at an early age and was raised by her older brothers. She was married to Pleny (sic) F. CUNNINGHAM at Troy, in Davis county, Iowa, September 12th, 1857. They lived in Troy, at Ottumwa and at Centervile until 1899 when they came to Fairfield to make it their home. Mr. CUNNINGHAM passed to his reward in 1900.

She was an earnest and devoted member of the Presbyterian church, regular in attendance on its services when her health permitted and active in its good work. Three children survive her. Miss May CUNNINGHAM and Mrs. Beatrice C. LEGGETT, of Fairfield, and Mrs. Florence MOSS, of Chicago, Illinois. Others went before the mother, one was Pearl CUNNINGHAM, a Sophomore in Parsons college at the time of his death, whose loss was a great and crushing sorrow.

Mrs. CUNNINGHAM was a woman of the keenest intellect, a great reader, of the widest sympathies and of the most determined force of character. Struggling for years with infirmities and ailments that would totally disable a person of ordinary will, she raised her children, gave them good educations and fitted them well for life. They and their children rise up to call her blessed.

Before the day of trained nurses, she was the friend of the afflicted and the priceless, gratuitous assistant of surgeons and physicians of Centerville, in every great crisis of disease or surgery. Freely and gladly she gave her time and her native intuitive skill to the suffering. And many there are who owe their lives and regained health to her kind offices at such a time.

A quiet, modest, retiring gentlewoman, seldom seen in any public place, except the church or the prayermeeting, she exercised a great power over all the circle of her acquaintance. Her opinions were founded on such a range of reading, keenness of sight and fullness of knowledge, and they were expressed with such a gentle force and charity for all and her character was so lofty, founded on the solid rock of the holy writ, that those who knew her delighted to sit at her feet and counsel with her.

She was seldom able to leave her own roof, but a group of friends gathered about her, who held her in the highest regard, and who will miss the mild and gentle but keen and comprehensive influence she unconsciously exercised, always for the right and always for the best, in their own affairs, and in the business of the church or the community at large. "She opened her mouth with wisdom; and in her tongue was the law of kindness. Her price was far above rubies."
