Trancriber note: This obituary was originally transcribed by Mary Prill, likely in the 1970's, and reprinted per her transcription in a collection of obituary transcriptions for Jefferson County. That first transcription was slightly abridged from the full text; that abridged transcription was then posted to the Jefferson County obituary collection for the IaGenWeb genealogy website by Joey Stark on June 6, 2006.

On August 20, 2010, a descendant of Rebecca's, Roma W., provided the information that one of the surnames associated with this obituary was "mispelled or misprinted"; this was in reference to the Stening surname. Roma provided information that the correct spelling should have been "Stierlin".

On August 20, 2010 this contributor examined the microfilm record of the Fairfield Daily Journal dated Dec. 6, 1915 on file at the Fairfield Public Library.

Below is a verbatim transcription of the full text (surnames in all caps per Jefferson county obituary submission preferences; the surnames in the original copy are not typed in all caps):

Monday Dec. 6, 1915, Pg. 3, Col. 4

MRS. REBECCA DOUD FUNERAL TOMORROW.

Mrs. Rebecca DOUD died at her home on South D Street about 2:30 o'clock Sunday morning. Death was due to old age although she had been in poor health only a short time.

Mrs. Doud was born in Washington County, Indiana, December 21st, 1838, daughter of Tilman (sic. looks like "Tinman" on the microfilm record/image) WRIGHT. In 1840 the family moved to Missouri where she grew to womanhood and married Mathew ADKINS. They moved to Jefferson County in 1861, Mr. ADKINS dying in 1883 (sic - Feb. 28, 1894). She was later married to John DOUD.

She is survived by the following children: Mrs. Samuel RAMBO of Mitchellville, Henry ADKINS of Fairfield, Mrs. George WILKINSON of Dearborn, Mo., Mrs. John REED of Davenport, Mrs. Theodore STENING of Davenport, Mrs. E. CRETH of Omaha, Neb.. There are also a number of grandchildren.

Mrs. DOUD was a faithful member of the Christian Church, the pastor of which, Rev. R.H. Polly will conduct the funeral services. The funeral will be held from the residence at 2:30 o'clock Wednesday afternoon. Burial will be in Evergreen cemetery.

*Transcribed for genealogy purposes; I have no relation to the person(s) mentioned.

Note: Buried at Old Fairfield Cemetery, Fairfield, Iowa. Lot 145. The reference in the obituary to Evergreen Cemetery was evidently in error (they are separate cemeteries although they are physically adjacent to each other, and at times have erroneously been considered as one).

Note: Rebecca was married several times. A daughter by an Adkins marriage was Etta Mae Adkins and a 1930 census finds this daughter as a widow with the married surname "Stierlin", living in the Davenport/Rock Island area at the time with her children. This is the "Mrs. Theodore STENING" referred to in the above full verbatim transcription by this contributor. Evidently either incorrect surname information was provided to the Fairfield Journal in the first place, or the surname was incorrectly spelled/interpreted by the reporter/typesetter.

Admin. note: There has been a further correction from Roma W. regarding Rebecca's daughter 'Mrs. E. CRETH' of Omaha, NE. This daughter was Ina ADKINS, a daughter of Rebecca's first marriage, born in Jefferson County in 1880. Ina was first married to a man with the last name of VAUGHAN (first name unknown), and then married Ernest GAETH (born about 1876 in Muhlenberg, Germany) on October 10, 1921, in Jackson Co., MO.

It should also be worth noting that while the surname of her fifth husband, William E. DOWD, is spelled with a 'w', her gravestone is engraved with the name spelled DOUD.
