Lawrence Martin 'Red' JOHNSON

Lawrence Martin "Red" JOHNSON, 81, of Libertyville, formerly of Fairfield, died at 12:35 p.m. Saturday, May 24, 2003, at Jefferson County Hospital.

The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at First Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Marvin Robeck officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. today at Raymond Funeral Home.

Memorials have been established at First Lutheran Church, American Heart Association and Fairfield Public Library.

Mr. JOHNSON was born Sept. 23, 1921, near Fairfield, the son of Elmer C. and Edith EDMUND JOHNSON. He married Ruth M. RINGELSPACH June 22, 1950, at First Lutheran Church in Fairfield. She died June 27, 1986. He married LeNora HICKENBOTTOM Jan. 4, 1989 at First Lutheran Church.

Mr. JOHNSON lived most of his life in the Fairfield area. He graduated from Lawrence High School (sic. where is that located?) and attended Parsons College. He served in the Air Corps during World War II and was stationed in England as an aircraft mechanic. He worked at The Dexter Company for many years as a quality control supervisor, for a time at J.I. Case Company in Burlington and farmed for many years.

Mr. JOHNSON was a member of First Lutheran Church, Libertyville Travelers and the Heritage Club. His pastimes included traveling and fishing. He was a member of the Fairfield men's bowling league and had been a semi-professional baseball player.

Survivors include his second wife; two sons, James L. JOHNSON and wife Sally of Cedar Rapids and Kenneth C. JOHNSON of Fairfield; two daughters, Mary L. STEELE and husband Jerry of Lockridge and Carol JOHNSON of Keosauqua; two stepsons, Larry and Lloyd HICKENBOTTOM, both of Batavia; and one step-daughter, Carolyn HICKENBOTTOM of Libertyville; nine grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; one brother, Donald JOHNSON of Fairfield; and one sister, Arlene JENS of Davenport.

Besides his first wife, he was preceded in death by his parents.
