Mexican Vet Is Called By Death

Martinsburg - Jan. 30. W.C. CASEY (sic. CATHEY), Mexican and civil war veteran and forty years a resident here, is dead.

He was born in 1827, served through the Mexican war in the First Tennessee, was at Monterey, Cerro Gordo, Vera Cruz, and had a badge of honor presented by the National Veterans association.

He was conscripted in the confederate army, escaped, joined Rose-erans (sic. literal translation from the microfilm copy but not sure if written in the original copy correctly) at Murphysborough, engaged in the secret service and went through the war in the One-Hundred Fiftieth Illinois.

Transcriber note: The CATHEY family of William C. CATHEY lived variously in, came from, and/or are buried in portions of Wapello/Keokuk/Jefferson counties of SE Iowa. William Cathey is buried at Martinsburg Cemetery, Martinsburg, Wapello County, Iowa. His headstone and this published obituary use 1827 as his birth year. At least one CATHEY family descendant had found references to the year being 1829.

For clarification, his birth and death dates on his headstone are: Aug. 26, 1827 and Jan. 13, 1920.
