BOLEY, Ralph D. -- Ralph D. BOLEY, 82, of Birmingham, died at 2:50 p.m. Monday, July 26, 2010, in the Van Buren County Hospital emergency room after suffering a heart attack while sitting on his lawnmower at home.

A service will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Stockport United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Peggy Ellison officiating. Burial will be in Maple Hill Cemetery in Birmingham, with military rites by American Legion Haney-Brannan Post No. 181.

Open visitation will begin at 2 p.m. Thursday at Pedrick Funeral Home in Keosauqua, with the family present from 6:30-8 p.m.

Memorials to Stockport United Methodist Church or American Legion Haney-Brannan Post may be left at the funeral home or the church or may be mailed to the family at 141 N. Liberty, Birmingham 52535.

Mr. BOLEY was born Aug. 13, 1927, near Birmingham, the son of James Nicholas and Hazel HILL BOLEY. He married Marilyn "Diddy" DODDS June 6, 1953, in First Christian Church in Fairfield.

Mr. BOLEY graduated from Birmingham High School in 1945 and from Parsons College in 1952. He taught in the Selma, South English and Douds high schools. He and his wife farmed in the Stockport and Birmingham area for 30 years. In 1985, they opened Boley Real Estate in Keosauqua and operated the business until selling it to their son Jim and his wife in 2002. Mr. BOLEY was a licensed real estate broker and appraiser.

Mr. BOLEY served in the United States Navy in the South Pacific and China prior to graduating from college. He witnessed the first atomic bomb test at Bikini in 1946.

Mr. BOLEY was a member of Stockport United Methodist Church, where he served on various committees and taught Sunday school for 51 years. He was ap ast commander and adjutant of American Legion Haney-Brannan Post No. 181 in Birmingham, a longtime member and director of Birmingham Lions Club and an original board member of Villages of Van Buren. He was a member of Mount Pleasant Post No. 661, 40-8, Atomic Veterans Association, Pheasants Forever and National Box Car Association. He had served on the Van Buren County Republican Central Committee and was a former treasurer of the Van Buren Cattlemen's Association.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, Mark BOLEY and wife Sue of Maxwell and Jim BOLEY and wife Barb of Keosauqua; one daughter, Jane QUINTANAR and husband Jose of Dallas, Texas; six grandchildren; five brothers, Wayne BOLEY of Keosauqua, Carl BOLEY of Burlington, Bill BOLEY and Donald BOLEY, both of Birmingham, and Nick BOLEY of Frisco, Colo.; and one sister, Roberta STEPHENSON of Keosauqua.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Vaunceil STEPHENSON and Darlene DeROSS.
