GEVOCK, Roman J. -- Roman J. GEVOCK, 86, of rural Brighton died at 7:45 A.M. Saturday July 3, 2010, at Washington County Hospital in Washington.

A Funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 A.M. Friday July 9, 2010, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in East Pleasant Plain with Rev. Tom WINIKATES and Rev. Charles J. Fladung officiating. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery in East Pleasant Plain. The family will greet friends at St. Joseph Catholic Church 3:00 to 8:30 P.M. Thursday with Prayers for a Christian Wake at 7:00 P.M. Memorials for the Brighton Volunteer First Responders or The Evelyn Gevock Memorial Scholarship Fund may be left at the church or mailed to Gould Funeral Home, PO Box 149, Brighton, IA-52540.

He was born July 26, 1923, in Fairfield to Joseph F. and Helen R. (ROGALL) GEVOCK. Roman grew up in the Pleasant Plain area and graduated from Pleasant Plain High School in 1940. He married Evelyn G. MINEART on June 5, 1946, in East Pleasant Plain. She died December 28, 2000. Roman drove a horse drawn school bus during high school, was a lifelong farmer and a long time member of Sts. Joseph and Cabrini Church, was a member of the 4th Degree Knights of Columbus, and worked at Louden Machinery Company in Fairfield for more than 30 years. Roman was quite active in community activities: member of the Brighton Lions Club, Wayland Tractor Club member, served for many years as a Pleasant Plain school board member, Jefferson County Township trustee, Louden Employee Credit Union board member, county manager for Archer Oil company for over 50 years, Jefferson County Farm Bureau past president, 2004 Jefferson County Conservation Farmer of the year, longtime Little League and Babe Ruth Coach and avid supporter of Fairfield High School Trojan athletics.

He is survived by one daughter, Theresa KASPER of Westminster, MD and six sons: Joseph (Gail) GEVOCK of Swisher, IA, William (Carole) GEVOCK of Brighton, James (Linda) GEVOCK, John (Cathy) GEVOCK and Philip (Marcia) GEVOCK, all of rural Fairfield and David (Darla) GEVOCK of Manhattan, KS, 23 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren, many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, great-grandchild, Rebecca and son-in-law Randy KASPER.
