Last Christmas For Grandchild Of Local Couple

Connie Sue ACKLEY, two-year-old granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. George ACKLEY of Fairfield, will receive a large tomorrow to help her celebrate her last Christmas.

A victim of cancer, Connie Sue is living on "borrowed time" at University hospitals in Iowa City. She is the daughter of Donald G. ACKLEY, Davenport.

Physicians found cancer when the child became suddenly ill on Christmas day last year. At that time they gave her six months to live. An operation was performed to remove a cancer-ridden gall bladder, but the disease had already spread to other vital organs.

Between hospital stays, Connie Sue has spent much time with her grandparents south of Fairfield. Her Christmas gift this year will be the largest and best doll her father can find.

Connie Sue's parents were divorced when the child was three months old. Since then she and her sister, Donna Jean, 5, have been cared for by their father.

Local Rites For Child

Connie Sue ACKLEY, granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. George ACKLEY of Fairfield, died Monday at University hospitals in Iowa City with her Christmas doll beside her.

Connie Sue's only Christmas wish was a large doll, which she received from her father, Donald ACKLEY of Davenport, a few days ago. The child had been ill with cancer for the past year.

Last rites will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. at the Weston Behner Funeral home in charge of the Rev. J. Roland Crandall. Burial will be in Evergreen cemetery.

Connie Sue's illness was first diagnosed as cancer on Christmas day, 1959. At that time doctors gave her only six months to live. She was cared for by her grandparents during the periods she was able to be out of the hospital.

Connie Sue was born July 2, 1958 at Davenport (sic. Iowa). Her parents were divorced a few months after her birth. In addition to her father and grandparents, she is survived by one sister, Donna Jean, 5.
