SPANIER, Kenneth I. -- Kenneth I. SPANIER, 87, of rural Richland, died early today, Friday, June 25, 2010, at Halcyon House in Washington, Iowa.

Arrangements are pending at Gould Funeral Home in Richland.

SPANIER, Kenneth Ivan -- Kenneth Ivan SPANIER, 87, of Richland, died Friday, June 25, 2010, at Halcyon House in Washington.

A celebration of life service will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Gould Funeral Home in Richland, with the Rev. Sallie Graves officiating. Cremation will follow the service.

Visitation will begin at 4 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home, with the family present from 7-8:30 p.m.

A general memorial has been established. Memorials may be left at the funeral home or may be mailed to the family at 33291 325th St., Richland 52585.

Mr. SPANIER was born Sept. 6, 1922, on the SPANIER family farm east of Richland, the son of Pete and Matilda CAVIN SPANIER. He married Phylis M. MILLER May 28, 1953, in Missouri.

Mr. SPANIER attended school in Richland. He worked for many years painting bridges for the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul & Pacific Railroad before marrying and later working as a carpenter. He and his wife lived and worked on the family farm with their two sons. Mr. SPANIER had been in declining health for several years.

He enjoyed hunting, mushrooming and working in the timber.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, Jere SPANIER and Leland SPANIER of Richland; three daughters, Sally MARTIN and husband Ron, Rosie LOWE and Cindy BEAN, all of Washington, Iowa; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; one sister, Geneva MECK of Peoria, Ill.; and one half sister, Helen HALSTEAD of Iowa City.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter, Charlotte CORRICK; one great-grandson; three brothers, George SPANIER, Jack SPANIER and an infant; one half brother, Vern SPANIER; and three half sisters, Irene ROBERTS, Margaret KREWSON and Laura STEPHENS.
