Sylvester B. "Vester" HEMM, 104, formerly of Douds, died at 7:05 p.m. Sunday, June 27, 2010, at Parkview Care Center in Fairfield.

Arrangements are pending at Pedrick Funeral Home in Douds.

Sylvester B. 'Vester' HEMM

Sylvester B. "Vester" HEMM, 104, formerly of Douds, died at 7:05 p.m. Sunday, June 27, 2010, at Parkview Care Center in Fairfield.

A graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Iowaville Cemetery in rural Selma, with the Rev. John Cooper officiating.

Family visitation will be from 9:30-10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Pedrick Funeral Home in Douds.

Memorials to the family may be left at the funeral home or may be mailed to the family at 14636 Highway 98, Douds 52551.

Mr. HEMM was born Sept. 16, 1905, near Eldon, the son of Lewis D. and Eliza J. LEWIS HEMM. He married Carletta M. ALLMAN Nov. 12, 1927, in Ottumwa. She died June 12, 1993.

Mr. HEMM farmed in the Selma and Douds area and worked in local coalmines for many years.

Survivors include two sons, Edward HEMM and wife Margie of Douds and Randy HEMM and wife Renae of Burlington; three daughters, Iola THOMAS and husband Robert of Eldon, Evelyn STAHL LEVESQUE of Eldon and Sandy KELLEY and husband Tim of Fairfield; one daughter-in-law Bernadine HEMM of Birmingham; 25 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; and one sister, Nellie BRICKER of St. Joseph, Mo.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Leroy HEMM; two infant sons; two brothers, Clarence and Francis HEMM; and two sisters, Helen HEMM and Cora LARA.
